Larissa is one of the oldest and most vibrant cities in Greece, with a history that dates back to the Neolithic era. From antiquity, when it was an important center for the Pelasgians and Thessalians, through the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, the city has consistently played a significant role as an administrative and commercial hub.

Today, it is the capital of Thessaly and a dynamic urban center that blends history with modern everyday life. At the heart of the city stands the impressive First Ancient Theater, one of its most important landmarks, while visitors can also explore the Second Ancient Theatre, the ruins of the Byzantine fortress on Frourio Hill, and the Mill of Pappas.

It is a city that is easy to explore on foot. Strolling through Tachydromeio Square (Plateia Tachydromeiou), the Mayor Sapkas Central Square (Kentriki Plateia) and the pedestrian streets of the city center reveals a welcoming and lively atmosphere, with plenty of options for coffee, food, and drinks. It is no coincidence that Larissa is often called the “city of coffee.” Green spaces are an essential part of the city, with Alcazar Park and the Pineios River offering beautiful routes for walking, cycling, and relaxation.

At the same time, the city has a strong cultural scene. The Diachronic Museum, the Municipal Art Gallery – G.I. Katsigras Museum, and the Folklore Historical Museum highlight the region’s history and art, while the Mill of Pappas operates as a modern cultural venue hosting events throughout the year. Major festivals, such as the Pineios Festival, LAcomics Festival, and the Artfools International Film Festival, transform the city into an open stage for culture.

In recent years, Larissa has also developed as a destination for conference and sports tourism, making use of its modern infrastructure and its connection to medical science, as Hippocrates, the “father of modern medicine,” passed away here.

Larissa is more than just the “capital of the plains.” It is a city that combines history with modern life, tradition with youthful energy — and one that ultimately offers visitors more than they expect. We hope you enjoy it!
